This Sussex Uni page shows the details of busses and trains:
https://www.sussex.ac.uk/about/directions
National Express runs coaches from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports to Brighton: https://www.nationalexpress.com/en
Anyone using the coach then walks to Old Stein, and catches a bus from there (see below).
The 23, 25, 25X, 28 and 29 buses run between the centre of Brighton and the Sussex campus.
The 25 buses run from Palmeira Square in Hove, through Churchill Square and the Old Steine in Brighton, into the campus.
The 23 route runs from Brighton Marina in the east, through Hanover, into the campus.
The 28 and 29 go from Churchill Square and stop outside the University campus.
Some 5B (Hollingbury) and 50 (Hollingdean) buses also run to the campus.
Travel time between the campus and Brighton is about 20 minutes. See bus timetables and information: https://www.buses.co.uk/
You can pay with the Brighton and Hove Busses app or cash. (Pound coins, no exchange).
Sussex Uni recommends 20 20 20 taxis for guests: https://www.202020taxis.cab/index.html They do sometimes do longhall, and sharing a taxi to an airport may also be a good option. You can book a Streamline taxi online, via their app or by calling 01273 202020.
20 20 20 have confirmed these prices with us:
Fares to Gatwick £60 (1-4 passengers) £70 (5-8 passengers)
Fares to Stansted £187 (1-4 passengers) £207 (5-8 passengers)
From airports, take the train to Brighton. When at Brighton Station, take the train to Falmer (9 minutes) to get to Sussex campus.
For information regarding routes, times and prices, visit the National Rail website or the Southern Railway website, or telephone 0845 748 4950. A 'Did You Know?' information leaflet has also been released by the Sussex Community Rail Partnership.
If you are travelling to campus from towards London, please note that due to major refurbishment works at Gatwick Airport, Brighton to London Victoria super off-peak day return tickets will be valid on Gatwick Express services for the duration of these works.
Getting to and from campus by train:
Falmer railway station is connected to the University campus by a subway under the A27.
Direct trains to Falmer run from Brighton, Lewes, Seaford, Eastbourne and Hastings. Passengers travelling via London need to change trains at Brighton station for Falmer.
You should have been sent an email about the accommodation. All delgates who booked accommodation are staying in the Northfield block (BN1 9BJ - you can give this postcode to the cab driver or use on online maps). A detailed map of with the house numbers is here.
When on Sussex Campus, the Reception for Northfield is in a grey building when entering the Northfield area (at the end of the campus). If you are arriving on office hours (8am-5pm) you can pick the keys up in the Reception. If arriving out of office hours, the porter in Bramber House (entrance at the West side of the building) will have the keys for you. Note that whilst there are common areas with kitchen in the flats, there are no kitchen utensils in the flats, so it’s not possible to cook unless you bring all with you.
There are various restaurants, cafés and shops on campus. In Bramber House there is a Co-Op supermarket which is open late. Opposite Bramber house is a pharmacy and the Tai Supermarket. Around campus there are cafés, and we recommend the Arts Piazza Café, the IDS café (which sells food during the day), and the Student Union Bar. Further info here.
Industrial action is ongoing in August-September, affecting rail services nationwide.
Please check the latest weekly transport update for information on upcoming train strikes. On RMT strike days, all train services to Falmer station are typically suspended.
The main UK railway union has recently declared a strike day as part of their ongoing dispute which could affect us or Saturday 2nd September. This means that there will be very few trains operating on that days. There will also be some trouble the following morning as the system start running again. You can read more and search for trains here: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/industrial-action-july-20230625/
However, the trains that can run will probably only be announced on the day. It should not affect the London Underground or the Eurostar directly. This will make getting to Gatwick Airport on Saturday 2nd September a bit slower. You should allow extra time and will probably need to take a coach. You can book coaches to Gatwick and Heathrow here. It's best to book these in advance online: https://www.nationalexpress.com/
Some rail companies released their reduced timetables for the 1st and 2nd September. In theory these should be on https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ by now, but check the individual company websites for travel around the UK, as this seems inconsistent.
Southern Rail say there will be a similar very limited service on Friday 1st of September and a limited one on Saturday 2nd: https://www.southernrailway.com/travel-information/plan-your-journey/industrial-action
People trying to get to Heathrow or Stansted can use this route then take the Underground.
Stansted Express say they will run a reduced service of 2 an hour on the 2nd of September, their page is very helpful: https://www.stanstedexpress.com/travel-information/rail-strike-advice/
